X. Something About April II
This is my redesign of Adrian Younge’s album, Something about April II. Adrian’s album, rather a cinematic score, is one of my favorite musical projects. Now to accompany my love for Adrian’s April series, this project has now become a personal favorite design project of my own.
My redesign includes a vinyl record and a booklet. The photographs used for this project are my own, taken from my series entitled “Coping.”
Something about April II can be described as a score to a film that was never made. I’ve never listened to such a masterpiece before. My breath has been stolen countless times. My heart emotionally trapped. Even my tear ducts have let loose.
The album tells a story about an interracial couple in the ‘70s whom deal with the scrutiny and pressures that result from their relationship. As compared to the first of the series, Something about April, this album speaks of the emotional turmoil the couple has when they attempt to escape their torment, please others, and date other people.
This redesign is my attempt to showcase my interpretation and emotional connection to Adrian’s work.
The back features the tracklist, the accompaning musicians, and the instruments use for each title.
The booklet includes a page for each track, an accompanying image, and a few stand alone photographic spreads.
Spread for Psalms
Spread for Step Beyond
There is no life but this one
Oh get a film with darling
If I disagree with you
But you cannot choose who it is
When you are falling in love with
Sometimes it returns sometimes it returns
Sometimes it returns yea
Takes you by surprise takes you by surprise
I will soak the sow joe
I have come to conclusion world is crazy
Sometimes just a chance needs to be given
To find true love
To finding true love
To find by my love
To find true love
To be found by love
I fall in love with you and choose you
Not to live but to I live
No way is a long facing that
Oh come on let's die together
Let life be our you
Let us step beyond.
Spread for Hear my Love.

Adrian Younge — Born in 1978, is an American composer, arranger and music producer based in the Los Angeles area. Adrian is also an entertainment law professor and a film scorer and editor.
Words by Linear Labs
In the four years since the release of Something About April, Adrian Younge has been coined America’s black genius: the evocation of analog vestige in a digital era. His majestic music has garnered him reverence, likened to Ennio Morricone’s best work and the Beatles’ tenacity to create new sounds. Making an indelible impression on modern vinyl heads and producers alike (having been sampled by DJ Premier, Jay-Z, Common, 50 Cent) the Something About April brand is an axiom to the modern “Breakbeat,” and Linear Labs is happy to announce its successor: Something About April II.
Recorded with a collection of rare instruments, Something About April II advances Younge’s musical paradigm with enterprising concepts, and grander compositions, synthesizing the boundaries between dark American soul, and classic European cinema. This latest release features an array of entrancing vocalists: Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab)and Bilal, perform duets on “Step Beyond” and “La Ballade,” reminiscent of duets from Serge Gainsborg & Jane Birkin; Raphael Saadiq blends “Black Jazz” vocals with psychedelic soul on “Magic Music,” while Israeli star, Karolina, delivers haunting chants over concertos like “Hear my love” and “Winter is Here.” Long time Adrian Younge collaborator Loren Oden croons as if the apparent ghost of Donnie Hathaway created one last love song with “Sandrine” and “Sittin’ by the Radio.”
Younge is the experimental spirit of the modernist vanguard, looking into the past to create the future. What this album extrapolates from vinyl culture, will become further magnified by its sampling down the line. Something About April II will replace the former as a holy grail for producers and collectors alike…
